Landscapes

To Willem Hofhuizen, landscape-painting was merely a “finger exercise”. Of course, to make a landscape painting it is important to study the motif, imprint it in the mind, mentally process it and find a suitable way to express it. But Hofhuizen preferred to do this from behind the window of his workshop, which offered a splendid view of the river Meuse and the Heugem district of Maastricht. Perhaps he painted landscapes at times when he needed new inspiration. In contrast to drawing, which was a process in which he explored new forms, landscape painting was something he did to relax.
